How The Auto Body Shops Repair The Rust On A Vehicle

Where oxygen is an essential for human beings without which life is impossible, there at the same time it is the enemy of some of the objects. Its hostility is greatest for the metals like iron with which, when it reacts, forms rust. The rust corrodes the metals gradually and damages them ultimately. For the same reason, rust is supposed to be one of the greatest foes of automobiles, which keeps trying to harm the auto body openly or furtively. Whenever your car gets any scratch or cut that exposes the metallic surface, the chances of the rust formation increase to a large extent. Although, the auto body is covered with the layer of paint finish but if the cut is severe, it can penetrate the coatings enabling the oxygen to access the bare metallic surface. The deceiving propagation of rust remains hidden until the irregularities are observed over the paint that has a tendency to scrape. It is important to repair the rust issues of your car in time so that its expansion can be halted and prevented the corrosion to take place in the long run.

To begin with, identify all the areas of your car, which are affected by corrosion. Wherever, the rust is visible, grind it away using a grinder. Not only the rust, but also remove the paint surrounding the rusted area to reveal the metallic surface of the auto body. The grinding should be done in a way that about three inches portion around the rusted area is exposed. The process of grinding is necessary because if the paint is done directly over the rust, the process of corrosion continues eating away the metal of the auto body.

Once all the rust is removed, use body filler to apply over the previously rusted regions. The coating of body filler should be sufficiently thick, and it should completely fill all the depressions caused by rust. Before going further, leave the filler for some time until it is fully dried.

When the filler has been applied, you may notice the presence of a lot of unevenness on the application area. To make the surface even, it must be sanded by a sanding block and using a sand paper of size 36 grit. The next covering is to be done using putty on the filler coating. When it has got dried, sand it with a sanding block which has been wrapped by a sandpaper of grit 80. The area which is not required to be painted should be covered with paper and masking tape.

Squirt the automotive primer over the whole area comprising the naked metal surface and then allow it to dry. Repeat the process three times to get three layers of primer. Again perform the sanding of the topmost primer layer with sanding block technique. Use 120 grit papers this time. To hide the primer layer, apply thin coats of auto body paints. There should be four layers of the paint and each layer must be given enough time for drying. When the paint is dried out completely, shower another four coats of a clear coat to give a shiny appearance to the auto body panel.
